About Us

Working Together - Producing Results

For nearly half a century, United Way for Jackson and George Counties (UWJGC) has led the way for community caring in southeast Mississippi. Twenty--three member agencies top the list of UWJGC’s local community partners.

However, our partnerships and initiatives don't stop there. Churches, school systems, elected officials, business and civic leaders, government entities, health care facilities, and numerous community-minded volunteers all partner with our local United Way. By working together, we can produce measurable results right here at home.

UWJGC History

Your United Way began in 1959 as a nonprofit organization called The United Fund. It was chartered following a community-wide needs assessment sponsored by the Moss Point and Pascagoula Chambers of Commerce. The first fundraising campaign was conducted in 1960 and pledges totaling $178,914 were allocated to support 10 health and human services agencies in Jackson County.

By 1973, The United Fund had become United Way of Jackson County. The United Way trademark logo, along with national slogans and United Way of America’s Standards of Excellence for Local United Way Organizations, were adopted.

The service area was expanded in 1993 with the official addition of George County. The organization’s name officially changed as well to United Way for Jackson & George Counties.

Today, your United Way funds 23 member agencies and programs. Additional funding opportunities for human services agencies are available through our Community Impact Program. We also provide gifts-in-kind, specialized training, and consultation to a host of local public and private non-profit social service agencies.
