Volunteers are Important People (VIP)
United Way for Jackson and George Counties Community Resources Center organized the first county wide celebration of National Volunteer Week in 1987 by hosting a luncheon to honor local volunteers nominated for Outstanding Volunteers of the Year. The theme of the first volunteer luncheon, VIP - Volunteers Are Important People, led to naming the annual celebration the United Way VIP Event. The first VIP Event recognized volunteers nominated in the two categories of Male and Female Volunteer of the Year. The following year additional categories were added, including youth and community service team Volunteer of the Year. The United Way Board of Directors also selects a volunteer of long standing community service to receive the United Way Humanitarian Award. A panel of United Way board members reviews each year's nominations and selects volunteers to receive the top honors. All nominees are recognized for their volunteer service and are presented certificates of appreciation. Each winner is given a grant to award to their desired non-profit organization. The VIP Event is open to the public and is annually attended by more than150 community leaders, volunteer nominees and sponsors.
The VIP Event was held Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Pelican Landing in Moss Point. Below you will see a picture of this years winners of the VIP Awards and a listing of their names and awards received below the photo.
